Iron and Steel Industry Should Cooperatively Promote Ecological Priority and Green Development

On November 30, Gao Yunhu, Director of Energy Conservation and Comprehensive Utilization Department of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, emphasized at the forum of green development of iron and steel industry in the past 40 years of reform and opening-up that the average energy consumption per unit process of sintering process in China's iron and steel enterprises is 28% higher than that of "leader" enterprises, and the energy consumption per unit product of backward enterprises is 40% higher than that of "leader" enterprises. For a long time, the extensive growth mode dominated by speed and scale in China has been unsustainable. We must firmly abandon the development mode that damages or even destroys the ecological environment and the practice of exchanging temporary ecological environment for temporary economic growth.

He pointed out that accelerating the green development of iron and steel industry is the inevitable choice to achieve high-quality development in the new era of iron and steel industry. It is suggested that the green development of iron and steel industry should achieve the following three points:

First, firmly establish the concept of green development. With the increasing demand of the people for beautiful ecological environment, more and more high-quality ecological products have become the people's thoughts, concerns and urgency. "The iron and steel industry should actively implement the new development concept, correctly grasp the relationship between ecological environment protection and industrial development, and explore a new way to coordinate the promotion of ecological priority and green development." Gao Yunhu stressed that "in particular, market demand, transportation, environmental capacity and supporting conditions of resources and energy should be taken into account in an overall way, and regional layout should be continuously optimized so as to make positive contributions to the construction of ecological civilization."

The second is to further accelerate the green transformation. Speed up technological innovation, implement green transformation of energy saving, water saving and comprehensive utilization, intensify the popularization and application of technologies such as high temperature and high pressure dry quenching and sintering vertical cooling, strengthen the comprehensive utilization of industrial solid wastes such as metallurgical slag and dust, and enhance the utilization of resources, energy and clean production level of the industry. We will accelerate the construction of green manufacturing system, green factories and green supply chains. We will encourage industrial parks dominated by iron and steel enterprises to strengthen energy cascade utilization and resource recycling, and build green parks to set up more green and low-carbon development benchmarks for industries. "The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will further strengthen energy-saving supervision, implement energy efficiency leaders in key industries, and promote the overall energy efficiency of the industry." Gao Yunhu said.

Third, to study new issues of green development. Facing the new forms and requirements of the current ecological civilization construction, the iron and steel industry must further study and improve the energy saving, water saving, land saving, material saving indicators and measurement requirements, speed up the formulation (revision) of energy consumption, water consumption, comprehensive utilization of resources and other standards, enhance the standardization level of green development of the iron and steel industry, and give full play to enterprise standards. The role of quasi-formulation shall be encouraged to formulate enterprise standards that are stricter than national and industrial standards. At the same time, the iron and steel industry should actively respond to the new situation of industrial development, promote the recycling of scrap iron and steel, promote the application of short process technology such as electric furnace steel, and promote the green transformation and upgrading of the iron and steel industry.
